Women's caul

A rectangular fragment of linen fabric embroidered with silver thread, originating from a women's caul. The fabric is adorned with raised embroidery on high backing. The embroidery features stylized plant and geometric motifs executed with silver and gilded sequins, spangles (rosettes, diamonds, leaves, cross-corrugated metal ribbons), and purl. The central floral motif features a polished ruby measuring 3 mm in diameter. The item comes from the collection of the Museum of Antiquities and Historical Memorabilia of Władysław Tarczyński in Łowicz, the first museum institution in Łowicz, founded in the early 20th century. According to the account, it was donated by Maria Chełmońska of Warsaw and is referred to as "Embroidery from the caul of Kraków Jewish women from the times of Jan Kazimierz".
