Wristwatch

Żmijewski, Artur (1966 - )

It is part of the collection

One of 5 black and white videos with sound in the style of old cinema, included in the work "Szukaliśmy w popiołach”. This work was created with the use of archaeological objects from the collection of the POLIN Museum. The video is dedicated to a damaged, incomplete and corroded part of a wristwatch - the dial. The action takes place in a watchmaker's workshop, where tools, magnifying glasses, screws, round small batteries, watches with and without straps, dials for hand watches and boxes with notes are in disarray. The next scene shows a man sitting behind a counter, bringing the dial close to his ear as if listening to the sound of the watch. In the following scene, a man is pretending that he is repairing a watch and then, once again, brings the dial close to his ear and pretends that he checks the result of his work. The sounds in the video imitate the ticking sound of a watch, picking up and putting down metal tools - a trick that makes the scene more realistic. The same watch is presented in the centre of the composition in the photograph that is part of this work (MPOLIN-M1382/12).
