Zina (women) – unpublished version (I)

Siemaszko, Olga (1911-2000)

A depiction of five heads, shown in close-up, the lines of some, especially the bottom three, are partly overlapping. This is a depiction of female prisoners of the Auschwitz camp, one of the unused illustrations for the book "Ręka umarłej" (Hand of a Deceased). It can be assumed that the work was created as an illustration for the short story "Zina". This is indicated by the similarity to another unpublished illustration, probably also to this story (a similar motif of deformed heads and their different arrangement, see MPOLIN-M1632). For the story, see the note to the work with accession number MPOLIN-M1629.

Composition in a painted bronze frame: its inner edges are straight, its outer edges – distant from the edges of the ground canvas – are also straight but unfinished; in many illustrations from this project these parts are unfinished, as the artist left their processing to the publisher's graphic designers, and prepared a passe-partout for a possible exhibition of the originals.

In places on the frame and margins there is a visible pencil line, dividing the work into rectangles.
