Żona (,,świętej pamięci) (Late Wife) – unpublished version

Siemaszko, Olga (1911-2000)

A symbolic representation of the view of Auschwitz from, as one might guess, from the Broniewskis' home in Warsaw. The barrier refers to the railway, but also, perhaps, it was supposed to be associated with the closure of life, including imprisonment. This is one of the unpublished versions of the illustrations to the poem "Żona" (Wife) by Władysław Broniewski, from the edition in the book "Ręka umarłej" (Hand of a Deceased) (the poem is accompanied by two illustrations in the volume, see the original of one of the designs of the second illustration: MPOLIN-M1639).
