Annual Conquest of the Great Stalagmite

Bok, Teodor (1947-2007)

It is part of the collection

Speleology was a great passion for Teodor Bok. Penetrating deep caves, and joint mountain expeditions connected the artist with Wojciech Przybyszewski (see letters of Teodor Bok to Wojciech Przybyszewski). However, Bok was always able to maintain humour and a playful distance, both in his art and his sport-mountain endeavours. An ironic comment on their shared fascination is a print given to Wojciech entitled The Annual Conquest of the Great Stalagmite. This ``mountain`` of men climbing one on top of another forms a nameless, monochromatic, indistinguishable mass. We do not doubt that they are cave explorers - they are dressed in wetsuits and helmets with head flashlights. One of them is perched on the top, and others are slipping down, while more and more people are coming... The mocking title suggests that this is a mocking, graphic record of a sheepish drive – exploring and conquering the same caves at the same time.

A gift from Wojciech Przybyszewski
