Baum, Ruth

Ruth Baum was born in Warsaw in 1922, the daughter of Emanuel and Felicja (nee Dziura). They lived in Muranów. From an early age, she tried her hand at literature and, in 1937, she made her debut in the pages of “Mały Przegląd” (Small Review magazine). After the outbreak of the World War II, together with her elder brother’s family, she fled to the USSR and, until 1946, she lived in Voroshilovgrad. After returning to Poland in 1946, she settled in Wrocław. She studied Polish literature and then worked as part of the literary editorial staff of a Wrocław radio station and also with the “Fołks Sztyme” magazine. In 1957, she her husband emigrated to Israel. She worked in the Polish-language “Nowiny Kurier” newspaper and wrote news items. She was particularly interested in the situations of people on the margins of society – the elderly, the poor and migrants.
