Besamim spice box

Besamim spice box of the tower type, with a round, moulded foot. Its shaft is composed of four narrow tubes supporting a cylindrical body that is covered by a conical lid and topped by a movable pennant. In the middle of its height, the body of the box is decorated with an acanthus leaf ornament. Three marks are visible on the spice box:

– HJ (?) monogram in an oval;

– mark of the assay office in Kraków – the number three in an oval (silver sample), the head of a woman in a headscarf facing left and the letter K;

– additional mark for silver – the head of a woman in a headscarf facing left within an oval.

The spice box is a small openwork container for spices such as cloves, ginger, rose petals or nutmeg. It has been used at the end of the Sabbath, during the Saturday of havdalah ceremony (Hebrew for separation). It is the celebration of the separation of the sacred from the profane, i.e. of the holy Sabbath from the other days of the week.

The item was purchased for the collection of the District Museum in Rzeszów in 1983.
