The design of theatre scenography – the interior of a room

Pacanowski, Bolesław (1901-1977)

It is interesting to compare this project with another from the collection: MPOLIN-M1146). We are at the same time – preparations for the Sabbath supper are in progress; the hands on the dial of the pendulum clock are set to three o'clock, so there are still a few hours left until sunset, when Shabbat begins. On the table covered with a white tablecloth stand two candlesticks with burning candles, and behind them lies a challah. A chest of drawers stands next to the door, but unlike in the MOLIN-M1146, this time its top is empty. So, apart from Shabbat, other symbolic references to religion, to Jewish festivals, have disappeared. Were these the recommendations of a censor? Or perhaps it resulted from the fact that the creators of the performance belonged to a group of secularised Jews, for whom Jewish religious ceremonies have remained only an element of tradition?
