Dzieci za drutami (Children Behind Barbed Wire) – unpublished version (II)

Siemaszko, Olga (1911-2000)

Depiction of five naked women with children in their arms in tones of white, brown and black. The figures shown against the dark rectangle are for the most part very light (especially the heads).

On the left side, two other female silhouettes are also faintly visible (blurred).

This is probably one of the unpublished versions of the illustrations to the story "Dzieci za drutami" (Children Behind Barbed Wire) by Maria Zarębińska-Broniewska, from the edition "Ręka umarłej" (Hand of a Deceased" (cf. the note to the work with accession number MPOLIN-M1621). In the frame of the heads – the outline of brown hair – one can see a Renaissance hairstyle, which may in turn bring to mind Madonnas, e.g. by Raphael.

A composition with a painted dark brown, rectangular frame, not extended to the edge of the canvas – the outer edges of the frame are left unfinished. If the work were published in a volume, the publisher's graphic designers would handle the processing (cropping) of these fragments.
