Wójcik, Jaśmina (1983-)

The drawing depicts a scene of a Jewish woman hiding in a wardrobe. The illustration is based on the story of a Polish couple hiding a Jewish woman. The woman was not allowed to leave the room, and at every sound of the doorbell she would hide in the wardrobe standing there and sit in it silently until the threat had passed. The woman formed a bond, obvious in such a situation, with the people sheltering her. The history highlights the motif of the wardrobe as a symbol of a hiding place – one that allowed many Jewish people to be saved from the Holocaust. This story was described by Hanna Krall and included in the reportage collection entitled "Żal" (Warsaw 2007): "Szafy i Żydzi… Być może jeden z ważniejszych symboli naszego wieku. Życie w szafie… Człowiek w szafie… W połowie dwudziestego wieku. W środku Europy”. MBK
