Wójcik, Jaśmina (1983-)

The drawing was created as an illustration for the description in Hanna Krall's reportage collection "Żal" (Warsaw 2007): "On a Sunday in August, when the townspeople were returning from walks in the woods and on the causeways on the Narew River, the usher of the city council appeared in the market square, banged a drum and read out an order. [...] Tomorrow at six o'clock the Jews are to appear in the main square... Confusion ensued. The Jews rushed to the rabbi's house. [...] They prepared warm clothes, packed their belongings in rucksacks and bundles, and the next morning, at six o'clock, they turned up at the market. [...] At seven o'clock motorbikes and trucks arrived. The SS surrounded the square. They directed the women and children to the cars, the men lined up in a column". This is a scene from the beginning of the war, when the Jews, after consulting the authorities of their community, obey the city council's order to appear in the Leżajsk market square. The residents showed up at the appointed hour in good faith, not sensing the fate awaiting them. MBK
