Wójcik, Jaśmina (1983-)

The drawing depicts prisoners locked in the gas chamber of a concentration camp, trying to fight to escape by scratching at the ceiling with their fingernails. This depiction is inspired by a scene from Hanna Krall's book "Sublokatorka" (Paris 1985), in which the protagonist recalls the story of a guide at the Majdanek death camp museum about the extermination of people in the gas chambers and their desperate, doomed fight for life. The woman questions whether any of the nail marks were left by her father: "Maybe one of the grooves is the mark of my father's hands? Why shouldn't it be the mark of his hands?". MBK
