The drawing is an illustration of a story described in Hanna Krall's book "Żal" (Warsaw 2007). Tzadik Menachem Mendel Morgenstern, later known as Kocker Rebbe, left Tomaszów in 1829 and decided to settle in Kock, a town near Lublin, where the Jewish population made up around 30 per cent of the population. However, he was greeted with stones by the residents. Paradoxically, however, this did not deter him, but encouraged him to settle there, as he believed that these people, expressing their views and emotions in such an extreme way, were not indifferent to – as Krall puts it – "the most important matters". Historical sources show that Kocker Rebbe gained great authority and established a Hasidic centre in the town. Thanks to him, Kock was visited by Jews from all over Poland and even from abroad. Josef Morgenstern, great-grandson of Menachem Mendel, was the rabbi of Kock from 1924 to 1939. The Jewish cemetery in Kock holds his concrete grave, which believers still visit today. MBK
