Julian Tuwim sitting at the table

Walentynowicz, Katarzyna (1986- )

One of the illustrations for the “Małe Polin” [Little Polin] exhibition guidebook: depiction of a man sitting at a one-legged table. It is a portrait of Julian Tuwim (at the table of Warsaw cafe “Ziemiańska"). White teacup on the table. The tabletop and the leg are white with an outlined zigzag pattern.

The author of Ptasie radio [Bird Radio] is resting both of his hands on the tabletop, his legs are crossed. He is wearing a white vest over dark clothing, a shirt and a tie can also be distinguished. Black trousers with long, white lines and black and white shoes (moccasins). Drawing of the poet’s face was probably based on the well known portrait photograph by Władysław Miernicki (c. 1950).

The drawing sends the viewers to an important part of the core exhibition – the interwar gallery. In the gallery’s narration cafe Ziemiańska is the place where Warsaw’s intelligentsia would meet – including many artists and writers of Jewish origin, essential for the Polish culture of the 1920s and 1930s.
