King Matt in winter

Walentynowicz, Katarzyna (1986- )

Drawing of smiling król Maciuś Pierwszy [king Matt the First] from the novel by Janusz Korczak (Henryk Goldszmit) published in 1923. After his father’s death the little protagonist becomes a king. Being a child he has many advisors to show him how to rule the state. However, the little king has also his own beliefs, ideas, intuitions and – most importantly – good intentions and understanding of the needs of his youngest subjects.

The smiling boy from the drawing is wearing a hat, a scarf, a coat and has a dark blush on his cheeks. On his right side, two ski poles, the skis below.

Matt is a patron figure of the Family Education Spot in the POLIN Museum. He became the main theme of the temporary exhibition for children “W Polsce Króla MAciusia” [In King Matt’s Poland] (organised on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the restoration of Poland’s independence in 2018; see: drawings for the project of Iwona Chmielewska’s “How hard it is it to be a king” in the POLIN Museum’s collection; about the exhibition see: https://www.polin.pl/pl/w-polsce-krola-maciusia). That drawing was created for the promotional materials of the winter break programme organised at the Family Education Spot “U Króla Maciusia” [At King Matt’s] in the POLIN Museum in 2017.
