Landscape of Kazimierz

Trachter, Symcha (1894-1942)

The painting, dated circa 1930 (oil, cardboard, 58 x 73.5 cm), depicts the landscape of Kazimierz. In the foreground are tall, slender trees with brown trunks and small green crowns. The trees are arranged in two groups on the left and right. The clearing between them reveals two buildings. Above are the ruins of a castle, below is a discernible house with a red roof, surrounded by greenery. The painting is painted with strong brushstrokes. The thick layer of paint creates a clear texture. The tone is dark, with predominantly green and dark blue colours. In the lower right-hand corner, there is a signature: "S. Trachter".

Symcha Trachter (1894-1942) – a painter and an illustrator associated with Lublin. He studied at the Warsaw School of Fine Arts and the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. He spent the years 1925-1929 in France. In 1931, the artist held his largest individual exhibition at the Jewish Society for the Promotion of Fine Arts in Warsaw. Trachter repeatedly stayed in Kazimierz Dolny to attend open-air workshops, where he met other artists coming there from other locations. His works were presented in Kazimierz Dolny at exhibitions in the Celejowska Tenement House (1932, 1933, 1935, 1939). He was a member of the Jewish Society for the Promotion of Fine Arts (from January 1939). In January 1940, he was taken to the Warsaw Ghetto. There he worked in a workshop, the so-called shed, producing whetstones. In 1942, together with Feliks Frydman and Samuel Puterman, he created a wall painting depicting Job in the hall of the Warsaw Jewish Council (German: Judenrat). He was murdered in the Treblinka extermination camp.
