Letter to Anna Zimmermann

Only one, but a long, six-page letter from Natalia Zajczyk to her sister Anna Zimmermann, who lived in Jerusalem, has survived from the inter-war years. When she wrote it on June 2 and 8, 1936, they had not seen each other for nine years. Natalia writes about a family reunion on the occasion of the 13th birthday of Hipek (Hipolit), one of the sons of their sister Sabina Bresler, she describes Sabina's difficult life after the divorce, she also reports what was happening with her younger brothers Dawid and Salk, she informs about illnesses in the family, and finally about her everyday life with Szymon Zajczyk. At one point she notes in pencil: "I have to keep plugging away at my writing because I am cooking dinner for tomorrow. It is already 10 ½ in the evening, but I go to school in the morning. Szymek took my pen in the meantime". | In Natalia's letter there are words of longing for her older sister ("Dear! I can feel your longing for us very well, because I am experiencing it myself") and the reflection: "Do not think that you feel bad that you are far away from us. Perhaps it is fate that has singled you out and blessed you. Oh how many worries you would have here with us! More than joy". (The letter from Natalia Zajczyk to Anna Zimmermann, 2 and 8 June 1936, MPOLIN-A31.2.1). | AmongAnna's numerous siblings living in Poland were: three sisters - Natalia, Sabina and Bronka and four brothers: Józef, Stanisław, Salomon and David. Natalia with her daughter, Józef with his wife and Bronisława survived the Holocaust. | Renata Piątkowska
