Letter to Tadeusz Perl

part of the collection

A letter from a sister claiming to be Maria Karczmarczyk. Address details – including the return address – handwritten by Jadwiga née Perl.

The name of Tadeusz Perl as addressee – written for safety with the added suffix "-ski".

Information about the packages, probably particularly large ones, may indicate that Perl well understood the dramatic situation of his immediate family and tried his best to help his sister and parents.

The sister writes about her plans in the third person as Maria reporting on Jadzia's plans. The letter includes an announcement of an attempt to go to the West. The name 'Vittel' used in the code of this information, combined with the time in which the woman builds these plans, indicate that Jadwiga will become one of the victims of the Hotel Polski operation (the murder of Jews who, for a lot of money, purchased false documents on the basis of which they were supposed to get out of Warsaw to Switzerland; for more information, see the note on the Wirtualny Sztetl website https://sztetl.org.pl/pl/miejscowosci/w/18-warszawa/116-miesza-martyrologii/51964-hotel-polski- w-warszawie-ul-dluga-29).

There is no information about the parents in the letter. This is probably a sign that they are dead, which the sister does not want to write to her brother about. However, he could have guessed this from the fact that she decided to leave Warsaw in the first place.

Content:

Dear Tadeusz,

Thank you very much for the packages; they are wonderful – I receive all of them, but truly, if it is a financial strain for you, don't send them because I manage somehow. You ask about Jadzia – I heard that she might leave for Vittel soon; it's in the Vosges. I just don't know when it will happen. She told me that she would write to you from there. I assume you have acquaintances there. Write soon.

Sending you warm kisses

Maria
