Market square in Kazimierz Dolny

Gabowicz, Józef Mojżesz (1862-1939)

The painting from around 1908 (pastel, paper, 22 x 30 cm) presents a view of the market square in Kazimierz Dolny seen from above, most likely from the slope of the Three Crosses Mountain. At the bottom, there are the roofs of the south-eastern side of the market square. On the left, in the middle of the picture, there is the Gdańsk Tenement House. The entire north-west frontage is shown in the centre, with a row of tenement houses with shops. Part of Senatorska Street with the Celejowska Tenement House is also visible. In the market square, there are stalls and silhouettes of people. At the top, the image is enclosed by an illuminated river. The frontage is brightened with white. There is a signature in the lower right corner: "J/ M/ G”.

Józef Mojżesz Gabowicz (1862-1939) - sculptor and painter. He was born in Kolno, and his family moved to Łomża and Tykocin later on. He began his studies at the Drawing School (Szkoła Rysunkowa) in Warsaw, and continued his education in St. Petersburg and Paris. In 1901, he returned to Warsaw and took up a job as an engraver at the Bracia Łopieńscy workshop; he began his cooperation with the Jewish Society for the Promotion of Fine Arts at the same time. In 1911, together with the painters Maurycy Trębacz and Jakub Weinles, he presented his sculptures in the Simons Passage in Warsaw. This was one of the first important exhibitions of artists of Jewish origin. He created mainly portraits and his studio was an important point on the artistic map of Warsaw at the time. However, he died in oblivion, and a large part of his achievements were destroyed during World War II.
