Naissance de l`Objet (Birth of an Object)

Berlewi, Henryk (1894-1967)

part of the history

When Henryk Berlewi visited Poland in 1966, he gave this work to Karol Kuryluk, and attached a dedication: "To the Minister / Karol Kuryluk and his honourable wife / as a token of a lasting and sincere friendship / H. Berlewi, Warsaw 30 July 1966" .

Naissance de l`Objet (Birth of an Object) from 1953 is a geometric-optical composition typical of Berlewi's post-war work, constructed of arcs, streamlined, with crossing and intertwining lines creating an apparently abstract, op-art structure. However, when we look at the work more closely, we will see a traditional still life emerging among the lines and arcs: a small, smooth basket with a handle standing on a round table. Naissance de l`Objet is one of Berlewi's works in which the artist implemented his belief that "The combination of poetry with geometric abstraction and kinetic forms is an interesting attempt to integrate art in life" (H. Berlewi, "Post scriptum", "Poezja" 1966, No. 11).
