Pathephone, telephone

Walentynowicz, Katarzyna (1986- )

One of the illustrations made for the “Małe Polin” [Little Polin] exhibition guidebook: depiction of objects from the interwar period.

Patephone on the left, consisting mostly of black elements. A traditional telephone with a rotary dial on the right (with ten finger-holes to dial the numbers with). The pathephone’s tube is the size of crate. A white vinyl record on the box, five increasingly smaller, circular zigzags on it.

The telephone is mostly black: only the receiver cradle, part of the front and the rotary dial are white.

The work reveals the draughtperson’s technique. Some elements of previous drafts can be visible. E.g. the line of the receiver was corrected: in the preliminary draft it was more protruding in comparison to the finale version. Also, on both sides fo the pathephone, the original lines are visible. Above the telephone receiver there’s a vaguely erased draft of human face.

Drawing was made on reused paper. Sketch of a lynx’s head overleaf – made partially with pencil and partially with fine liner.
