Photograph depicting the deportation of Olkusz Jews to Auschwitz

Twenty-five photographs (positive prints) with dimensions of 9 × 14 cm or smaller photographs depicting the actions of the occupier during the liquidation of the ghetto and the deportation of the majority of Olkusz Jews to Auschwitz. Those events took place in the summer of 1942 as part of a large-scale operation carried out in the entire region, including Sosnowiec, Będzin, Dąbrowa Górnicza, Czeladź, Chrzanów, and Jaworzno. The actions likely began on the night of 9th-10th June: the Jews were assembled by German formations and the Jewish militia in the building of the former junior high school (now F. Nullo Street / ul. F. Nullo), and the next day they were transported to the Kasa Chorych building (now A. Mickiewicza Street / ul. A. Mickiewicza), leaving only around 200 able-bodied individuals who were later sent to labour camps. The remaining Jews, over 3,000 people, were transported by train to Auschwitz on 13th and 15th June. Efraim Parasol recalls: "On 9th June 1942, while the whole community was still asleep, the ghetto was besieged by several hundred Gestapo and SS members, and amidst constant gunfire, the entire Jewish population was driven into the building of the former junior high school, and terrible scenes unfolded until 11th June. The elderly, the sick, women, and children were simply suffocating from the crowd and the heat. The heat was unbearable. They couldn't get a drop of water, and the gunfire didn't cease; people were dropping dead like flies. When the railway carriages were brought, the Jewish population, mostly consisting of the elderly and children, was herded into them, approximately 2,000 people. The bodies of the deceased were also thrown into the railway carriages together with the living. The railway carriages were closed, sealed, and sent straight to the crematorium in Oświęcim" (K. Kocjan, Zagłada olkuskich Żydów, 2nd edition, Bukowno 2017, p. 114). The photographs depict all stages of those events, showing both the displaced individuals and the perpetrators: soldiers, policemen, military policemen, and militia members. Since 2006, the Olkusz March of Remembrance has been held to honour the victims, with its route leading from the Kasa Chorych building (currently the county office) to the train station.
