The photo postcard depicts a married couple with a child. The photograph was taken in a studio, presumably against a curtain, near cabinet card design elements (colonnades). A woman and a man are sitting, and about a seven-year-old girl is standing in the middle in front of them. The stout, bearded man with a high forehead is wearing a double-breasted, long jacket buttoned at the top button, paired with a white shirt. He is resting his right hand on his knee, while his left arm is embracing the woman (his wife), who is dressed in a white high-necked blouse with long sleeves adorned with a jabot. The woman has her hair (possibly a wig) pulled up high above her ears. On her chest, there is a typical Art Nouveau necklace with an ornate clasp. The young girl, approximately seven-year-old, is dressed in a light striped dress, embellished with a wide ruffle at the top flowing over her shoulders. Her loose hair, parted to the left, is adorned with a bow above her right ear. On the back of the photograph, there is text in Yiddish and address in Russian. The recipient was Izaak Garnek, residing at ul. Nowolipie 9 (9 Nowolipie Street) in Warsaw, and the sender was M. Garnek from Łódź at ul. Piotrkowska 31 (31 Piotrkowska Street). The original text on the address side:
Въ Городъ Варшаву | Нова Липа ул. №9. | Г-ну Исааку Гарнекъ. | изъ города Лодзи Педроковской | ул. №31. М. Гарнекъ (Polish transcription: W Gorod Warszawu | Nowa Lipa ul. №9. | G-nu Isaaku Garnek. | iz goroda Lodzi Pedrokowskoj | ul. №31. M. Garnek).
There are three visible postmarks, including one on a red stamp, partially preserved. The lowest postmark has the Cyrillic inscription: ВАРШАВА | 18.III.10ДН[?]. | ГОРОД[…] (Warsaw | 18 III 10DN [?]). The date of receipt in Warsaw, visible on this postmark, ends with the number 10. Two other postmarks, presumably from Łódź, also end with this number (the numbers 1, 7, 3 are faintly visible on them), so it can be assumed that 10 is a shorthand for the year 1910. At the top of the page, an imprint reads: ВСЕМІРНЫЙ ПОЧТОВЫЙ СОЮЗЪ РОССІЯ.| UNION POSTALE UNIVERSELLE RUSSIE. | ОТКРЫТОЕ ПИСЬМО.– CARTE POSTALE.
The photograph was the first item donated by Helena Aronow to the POLIN Museum during her visit to Warsaw in July 2018. The rest of the photo album was donated three months later when Museum staff visited the donor's home in Israel. We are not certain where the photograph was located in the album before it was removed. Perhaps it was inserted loosely, like several other photographs.
