Litauer-Schneider, Mery (1900-1992)

Although it is landscape that was the most common subject of Mery (Mary) Litauer-Schneider’s paintings, the artist often painted portraits, nudes and figural compositions. Among the best known ones are “Portrait of the [Artist’s] Husband” and “Female Nude”, painted in 1947. It was also in that time that the “Portrait of a Man Smoking a Nargileh” was created. It depicts a man indulging in the pleasure of smoking a pipe, popular in Arab countries, called a nargileh in Lebanon. JO
