Queen Alef

Walentynowicz, Katarzyna (1986- )

Depiction of the queen - a figure from one of the court cards - standing next to a card. She is one of the main characters in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll (her suit is hearts; she is an antagonist). She is wearing a black crown and a checkered cape. She is holding a card with Hebrew letter aleph on it. The card is big – almost the woman’s hight and wider than her; above the upper edge of the card only the arms and the head of the queen can be seen, below the bottom edge of the card – only her shoes with black toes and high heels.

Aleph is the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet. It has significantly many cabalistic interpretations, it appears on amulets and in magic formulas.

The drawing was a part of the visuals prepared for the International Children’s Day in the POLIN Museum in 2016, inspired by Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll (www.polin.pl/pl/dziendziecka2016).
