Rifle

Chmielewska, Iwona (1960- )

The drawing shows King Maciuś the First with a rifle. The boy is dressed in the same costume as in other representations: a red jacket with a white collar over it and red trousers half-legged, brown leggings, brown shoes. This is an illustration for the plot of Janusz Korczak's novel, in which the king is forced to take part in a war (he has been declared war by three countries at once). The rifle the boy is leaning on is bigger than he is - Iwona Chmielewska has thus suggestively rendered a situation that exceeds his sensitivity. The barrel of the rifle comes between the crown (the leitmotif of the project) and the boy's head. The figure - since the composition was made as a collage of drawn elements and reused cards - is standing on a yellowish rectangle, which is a yellowed sheet of paper used by the artist (the bottom of the cover of "Wykłady z historii filozofii i myśli społecznej odrodzenia" [Lectures on the History of Philosophy and Social Thought from the Renaissance] by Andrzej Nowicki); the dark grey-blue background is the used folder cover (the producer's logo is visible on the back; the card has small cuts at the edges).
