Sabbath candle holders

Sabbath candle holders from the collection of the Regional Museum in Pińczów. They have a square base with a fancifully profiled floral design. On the wall of the base the following punched in large capital letters: the inscription "Szyldberg", further above the line the monogram "I.S." (Józef Sosnkowski), and below it the date "1866" and the silver hallmark "84". In Russia, where the weight of silver was measured in zolotniki, the lowest and most common hallmark was 84. Illegible markings next to it. At the end, the scales – a trademark of the goldsmith. Szyldberg was active from the 1850s to the 1870s. His workshop was located at 31 Nalewki Street in Warsaw.

Wreaths of flowers diverge from the base, tapering upwards. The centre is occupied by a sphere with floral patterns. A characteristic feature is the two umbrella-shaped inverted cup elements with soft finials. The whole is fancifully shaped, richly decorated with floral ornaments. A labour-intensive repoussé technique was used here, which involves hammering tiny indentations into the silver plate on one side to achieve a convex pattern on the other side. It is topped by a cup with a hole for a candle.
