Shin tree

Walentynowicz, Katarzyna (1986- )

Depiction of a tree. Its triple trunk and leaves create the Hebrew letter shin. There is a branch on each of the trunks. The first from the left has just one, black leave, similarly the second, the third one is leaning strongly toward the left edge, with three leaves. The trunk is white, covered with many black stripes of different width resembling the birch bark.

The letter shin is important for the artistic educational projects connected with Jewish culture, as being one of the four letters placed on dreidels – spinning tops used during Hanukkah plays – (a dreidel – also the Hanukkah top). When the dreidel lends with “shin” at the top the player is required to give the coin back to the “bank”, see: dreidel and its description in e-catalogue: MPOLIN-M763).

Drawing is a part of the visuals created for the Family Education Spot. It was used in every visual aspect of FES’s opening (among others: on posters, folders and other imprints, bookstands, photo-booth, monidło, walls and foams).

Overleaf a colourful, preliminary imprint – as in many cases of Walentynowicz’s designs, it was made on a reused paper.
