Unicorn

Walentynowicz, Katarzyna (1986- )

Depiction of a unicorn (a horselike creature but with a single horn at the middle of its head near the eyes). Anthropomorphised – the unicorn has human eyes and (schematic) human smile, it is sitting on its tail.

Unicorn is a legendary creature, present in many cultures around the world, also in the Jewish tradition: it is a motif characteristic for the sacral art of Judaism (widespread in the 17th century in the Eastern Europe). It has many symbolic meanings in the Jewish culture, e.g. of a righteous man (for which reason it is often depicted, i.a., on the matzevahs), it can also stand for salvation.

Drawing created on reused paper, overleaf an imprint for the National Museum in Warsaw.
