The album from Gurs

Lechtmann, Sioma (1916-1945)

The album is a notebook with very thin pages, the so-called clean (unprinted), bound in linen, with 15 black and white or coloured (single-colour; different colours) graphics glued in, one on the card (recto pages); vertical graphics (except graphics on card 11), pasted on subsequent cards. At least two authors of works can be distinguished: a graphic artist named Klaus (surname unknown) and a graphic artist signing the works of FB / BF. Some of the graphics show scenes from the camp (barracks, infirmary, fence), some are satirical and some propaganda. The symbol of the three-pointed star repeated in the graphics is the emblem of the International Brigades of the Spanish Civil War.

On the front end paper (right part, recto page) a dedication in German, saying: “Dear Tonjale! | Please accept this little gift for your 23rd birthday. I wish you that all your wishes come true, that you would be happy. | Gurs camp | 8 January 1940 | Your Sioma.

Below the glued graphics there are inscriptions mainly in German - by the hand of the creator of the birthday album, constituting comments or supplements to the sending of the graphics:

p. 1 - under the graphic showing two women by a tree, waving at men behind wires: "We will not forget about you";

p. 2 - below the graphic with a lying man with his head on the pillow (on the open door the inscription: TBC - the graphic therefore shows a person suffering from tuberculosis): "Nevertheless:« We endure!»";

p. 3 - under the graphic with a man sitting in a coat and writing: "One of our strongest weapons: knowledge";

p. 4 - under the graphic with a man standing in the open door, facing the sky lit by the rays of the setting sun (?): "Our" relaxation break ";

p. 6 - under the graphic with a naked man on the background of the International Brigades' emblem: "We are fighting everywhere for the liberation of our homeland" (in the upper right corner of the graphic the inscription: FUER EIN FREIES | BESTERREICH! - "FOR FREE, BEST LAND!");

p. 7 - under the graphic with a bust of a naked man with a book (under which the arms of the Brigade emblem protrude): "Our youth is at the station" (above, in the graphic: "Youth of the sincere [?]");

p. 8 - in the graphic with men with an accordion and a book and two swallows the inscription: "die Heimat ist weit ..." - "the homeland is far ...", under the graphic there is a signature-adjective: "but we are as closely associated with it as possible";

p. 9 - under a green graphic with a huge head of a man above the barracks and a fence: "You have to fight for freedom" (matrix inscriptions: "Liberté, liberté | cherie", under the stage: "combats avec tes défenseurs!");

p. 10 - under the graphic with two children cuddled up to each other: "For the peaceful and happy future of our children";

p. 12 - under the graphic with a man with a bayonet: "Better to die standing than to live on your knees "([La] Passionara) [pseudonym of Dolores Ibárruri Gómez, a famous Spanish communist]”; (meaning of the handwritten inscription on the graphic not recognized; subtext Klaus | Gurs, August [August] 39 ”);

p. 13 - on the graphic showing the fight: "Ebro [town]. Kote [incomprehensible word] No 565…. [translation uncertain:] You will never be heroes, Spaniards. Forget his teachings ”;
