Deportation

Jamiołkowska, Aleksandra (1993- )

Image of Jerzy Diatłowicki’s grandmother, Klara (Chajka) with suitcases and trunks which probably contained hastily packed possessions of the Diatłowickis, before the deportation from Luck deep into the territory of USSR .

Three-quarter take of Klara Diatłowicka, from her knees up imagined as a woman with dark hair falling on her neck, from underneath a white scarf. Sketched eyebrows and nose, no outline of mouth. Behind her, there are suitcases and trunks, and in the background a man, seen from the knees up, the rest of his legs obscured by the luggage. He is turned backwards, facing some unspecified dark shape (a column?). The man is wearing a long, dark robe reaching his thighs, and has tall headwear. It is probably a representation of a rail worker. On the right side of the figure there is a drawing of yet another man. He is outlined, depicted a bit from the side, without any exact features, with a suitcase in his right hand. He is speculated to be Klara’s husband, Józef Diatłowicki.

In the short film Syberyjski diament [Siberian Diamond] (2016), based on the videotaped oral history interview with Jerzy Diatłowicki (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgxK-5rEiRU) the image is intercut with the words: "My family was exiled from Luck during the so called second deportation in 1940".
