District Museum in Tarnów

The District Museum in Tarnów is a cultural institution of the Małopolskie Province. It exhibits its collections in branches and sub-branches located both in Tarnów itself and in other towns and cities in the Malopolska region: Dębno, Dołęga, Wierzchosławice, Nowy Wiśnicz and Zalipie – the "Painted Village" popular with tourists. Visitors can look forward to exhibitions of a varied nature: biographical, historical, artistic and ethnographic.

For many years, the District Museum in Tarnów has amassed collections relating to history, art, archaeology and ethnography. Historical memorabilia include various types of objects bearing witness to past eras or events, particularly relating to the history of Tarnów and the Tarnów region. The largest part of the collection, in terms of numbers, is made up of works of fine art, painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, artistic handicrafts and applied arts. Of particular note are the collections of Sarmatian portraiture as well as glassware and porcelain from the former collection of the princely House of Sanguszko. For years, Tarnów museum staff have searched for more fragments of the once monumental "Transylvanian Panorama", painted under Jan Styka's direction. An important place is occupied by works of art related to the city of Tarnów through their creators or subject matter. Archaeological movable monuments from the region and culturally related areas are collected. The ethnographic collection is dominated by products of traditional and contemporary folk culture of the Tarnów region and objects related to Roma culture in the broadest sense.
