Farewell letter to Chaja Belchatowska and Boruch Szpigel

part of the collection

Letter from Marek Edelman, written in black pen on a sheet of so-called blank paper, in Polish; written over half of the sheet, in small handwriting. No place or date (probably March 1946) of writing. Deletions of blurbs in three places in the text. In the text, among other things, assurance of continued kindness and mutual trust. Full text (original punctuation preserved): My dear,

It is terribly hard to say goodbye to you. After all, all the people, with whom you can talk, are now leaving. So, it is very difficult to stay without someone to whom you can open your mouth. In recent months, I have not had much contact with you. Maybe, you thought that I’d completely forgotten about you. But know, whenever I thought that we would have to face new trials – I thought only about you. I know that people, who have not failed once – who will also never let us down – can be trusted. Even when I was very unpleasant and rude, I counted on you and, in my own way, loved you. It turns out something like that was official this evening. And that is why I also must say that you, with whom I was least associated, were closest to me. It is difficult. Go to, maybe, a better easier life. But hard times will not pass you by. I am convinced that, maybe one day, by chance, I will be with you also. You will not fail. You will certainly never let anyone down. I will always count on you. This. – – – – – . You understand the rest. Believe in me and I will believe in you. | Your Marek.
