Letter to Boruch and Chaja Spiegel

part of the collection

Letter in Polish, written double-sided on a single sheet of letterhead paper with, among other things, a header in Hebrew (letter started on a page without a header) by Pnina Grynszpan-Frymer of Tel-Aviv Spiegel. Grynszpan-Frymer writes that she retired and travelled to Europe. She also reports the death of Masza Glajtman's husband, Jakub Putermilch (with whom they hid together in the ruins of the city after the Warsaw Uprising). Grynszpan-Frymer writes (punctuation modernised) that during the tour, “One thing that agonised us was that we left Jakubek sick, and he waited for us impatiently again, and the day after our return that he saw us, he died. Yes, my dears, Jakubek is gone, a great misfortune has happened to Masza and the children. He was ill for several months, fought [against] the disease, but unfortunately died on 11/9/84. A great tragedy. That's life, very sad, I can't get over [the] thought that Jakubek is gone”. He concludes the letter with the information: “I am sending you a book of mine that has recently come out [published] by kibbutz Lochamei Getaot [ha-Kibuts ha-me'uhad]”. (referring to the memoir 'Yamenu hayu ha-lelot: mi-zikhronoteha shel haverah ba-Irgun ha-Yehudi ha-lohem' / 'The Nights Had Been Our Days').
