Portrait of Roman Schneider

Litauer-Schneider, Mery (1900-1992)

After his release from the labour camp in 1941 and joining the Anders Army in its centre in Buzuluk, Mery (Mary) Litauer-Schneider reunited with her husband Roman Schneider in Yangiyul, Uzbekistan. From there, together with the Anders Army, they were evacuated to Iran. It was precisely during the escape from what the artist called the “Soviet hell”, somewhere on the way to the Iranian border, that the created the “Portrait of Roman Schneider”, with whom they miraculously found themselves after staying in camps hundreds of kilometres apart. It is a portrait of a man looking into the distance, wearing a uniform and an English-type forage cap, characteristic of the Anders’ Army.
